Same history as you. At 62 I'm finally there but it took cancer plus having more than I'll spend in my lifetime. I've been financially independent for a while but until recently I still stressed about spending tiny amounts of money.
The balance sheet can move through these levels much faster than the person holding it. You can reach independence financially and still be managing the position like survival is one bad month away.
